By BrainFall Staff - Published: January 6, 2025

Top Chef is a long-running reality competition show that pits talented chefs against each other to prove who’s the best around. These chefs compete in culinary challenges for the show’s judges, including Tom Colicchio and Padma Lakshmi. Viewers love seeing how each chef contestant approaches the challenges given to them. The contestants compete in quickfire and elimination challenges until just three chefs remain in the finale.

If you’re a long-time viewer of the show, you’ve probably imagined what you would do if you were in the Top Chef kitchen. You’ve probably groaned as you watched a chef do one of the big Top Chef no-nos, like cooking risotto. And you’ve probably concocted some of your own dishes in your head and imagined what Padma and Tom would say at judges’ table.

Now’s your chance to see how you would really do on Top Chef. Take this quiz to find out if you’ll make it to the finales or be eliminated before Restaurant Wars!

      Top Chef

Top Chef is a cooking show that has been airing on Bravo since 2006. The show is hosted by Padma Lakshmi. She also serves as a judge alongside Tom Colicchio, and they typically also bring on a new culinary expert guest judge every week. The judges decide who wins and who loses the elimination challenge. Every week, one or more contestants are sent home. In the end, one chef is crowned 'top chef.' There's also a fan favorite chosen each season. Many contestants serve as executive chef in their home restaurants. There are also some who are culinary school instructors.

One of the unique things about Top Chef is that each season takes place in a different city. For example, season three took place in South Florida, and it showed the unique cuisine of Miami. Top Chef has remained popular throughout the years because of the delicious food and the unique personalities of the chef contestants.

      Question 1/10

It's time for the first quickfire challenge, and Padma Lakshmi has asked you to make a dish that 'shows who you are as a chef.' What do you make?

      • A complicated dish with a ton of components... you can make a four-course meal in 20 minutes, right?
      • A dish that looks simple, but really has a ton of tricky technical parts
      • Since it's my first challenge, I play it safe and make something quick but still delicious
      • Um... my mind is blank. Oh well, it's just the first challenge, right?
      Question 2/10

You're making roast duck and unfortunately burned part of it. What do you do?

      • Keep the burned part in and try to sell it to the judges. It's a... textural component
      • Toss the burned part and focus on making the remaining part of my dish the best it can be
      • Toss the burned part and use my skills to make a delicious duck salad
      • Toss the whole dish and start again. Ten minutes is enough time to make a brand-new roast duck, right?
      Question 3/10

It's time for the first team challenge. What role are you taking on?

      • I agree to make something I've never made before since that's what the team asks me to do
      • I want to lead the group and have a big role in deciding what we're making
      • I'll take the least desirable part of the challenge to show I'm a team player
      • I take on one of the side dishes and focus on making the best potatoes of my life
      Question 4/10

It's time for another quickfire challenge, and this one is sponsored by a well-known ice cream brand. You're told to transform the sweet ice cream into a savory dish. What do you do?

      • I make a sweet dish featuring ice cream and a cake — my baking skills are good enough that the judges will let it slide
      • I use all my technical skills to transform the ice cream into a cheesy, umami-filled pasta sauce
      • I make a cold dish and add spicy components to transform the ice cream
      • I panic and somehow end up with a bowl of melting ice cream at the end
      Question 5/10

It's almost the halfway point in the competition, and you're feeling confident. You decide to attempt a 'cursed' dish that often knocks chefs out of the competition. Which dish are you making?

      • Risotto
      • A trio of dishes
      • A panna cotta
      • A dish that shows off my molecular gastronomy skills
      Question 6/10

It's time for Restaurant Wars! What position do you go for?

      • I want to be executive chef
      • I'm going for front-of-house
      • I'm going for line cook
      • I'll be a line cook, and since it's an easier position, I'll cook two dishes
      Question 7/10

Unfortunately, your last dish didn't wow the judges, and you've been told to pack your knives and go. But now, it's time for Last Chance Kitchen. What's your strategy?

      • Do as many components as possible. I may not finish on time, but at least I'll have lots of interesting dishes to serve
      • Go for something simple that fits the brief and packs a big flavor punch
      • Go for something 'out there' that still technically fits the brief
      • Stay focused and stick to the brief. This isn't the time for too much creativity
      Question 8/10

You're back in the Top Chef kitchen, and it's time for the quarter-finals! For the elimination challenge, you're told to create a vegan dish. What do you make?

      • A salad with a unique dressing
      • A dish that celebrates seasonal vegetables, which I cook in a wide variety of ways
      • A flavorful curry
      • A vegan dessert with coconut milk
      Question 9/10

You're in the semi-finals, and you've moved to a new location: Tucson, Arizona. You're told to make a dish that celebrates the city. What do you make?

      • Pork shoulder glazed in chiltepin barbecue sauce
      • Lamb chop with chiltepin vinaigrette
      • Nopal Relleno with shrimp purée
      • Mission Garden Tom Yum
      Question 10/10

You've made it to the finals, where you're told to cook the 'best four-course meal of your life.' What are you making?

      • Stuffed chicken breast with pecorino & jalapeno, roasted chili apple, butternut squash & brussels sprouts hash, lime crema with nitro raspberries
      • Hamachi with caviar, lobster laksa, Mongolian lamb, and pumpkin pie mille-feuille
      • Lamb tartare with tomato & celery salad, green gumbo with seafood, braised beef cheek with black-eyed peas, and yam bread pudding
      • Kataifi wrapped shrimp with tangerine syrup, taleggio cappelletti in roasted chicken broth, milk-braised veal, sticky toffee pudding
