How Much Do You Know About Famous Movie Plot Holes?

How Much Do You Know About Famous Movie Plot Holes?
      Movies

By BrainFall Staff - Published: November 7, 2024

Plot holes are in just about all movies ever made, and some are more memorable than others. Even the best movies of all time have at least one moment that caused fans to question the integrity of the storyline. Since plot holes will always exist, movie fans expect to find them. They rarely will ever ruin an entire movie storyline to the point where the film will bomb on the big screen, but when they do, fans never forget.

Film creators spend many hours, before and after filming, cleaning up the story and making sure the film has a linear flow that gives the audience a much-needed payoff at its conclusion. A movie plot hole does not always have to be a terrible thing either. For example, just about every one of the Marvel movies, the Dark Knight movies, Star Wars films, Harry Potter movies, and even the Toy Story franchise has at least one plot hole. But we still want to watch them anyways.

When it comes to pop culture, we tend to enjoy imperfection the same way we watch Jedidiah talk about crop circles or boarding the alien mothership… because it is entertaining.

      Movie plot holes

A movie plot hole is a gap or inconsistency in a story's plot that goes against the established logic or continuity of the narrative. Every story has at least one plot hole if you dig deep enough. Most fans can spend months binge-watching every single film ever made and comb through the whole plot only to discover that the same problem exists in all films, even the great movies.

While major plot holes can be frustrating for audiences who become invested in a movie's storyline, they can also be a source of entertainment and discussion. Fans love to talk about and dissect the reasons behind a glaring plot hole. So regardless if it is from bad writing, a genuine mistake, or even just a creative choice, plot holes will always exist on the big screen. From blockbuster films such as Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: Episode IV to The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Tomb Raider, even the best movies have plot holes.

      Question 1/10

In The Shawshank Redemption, what is the biggest plot hole that doesn't make sense even within the established logic of the film?

      • Given the strict rules regarding what items inmates are allowed to receive, it is not possible that Andy Dufresne would be able to obtain the Rita Hayworth poster for his cell
      • With no access to outside funds, the film does not explain how Andy Dufresne was able to finance the new library he helped build
      • With the high walls and massive security guard presence, the odds of Andy Dufresne escaping without capture are impossible
      • After escaping through the tunnel he dug from the hole in his wall, how was Andy Dufresne able to pin the poster back on his wall?
      Question 2/10

Which character ends up being revealed as having the Death Star plans loaded into his memory the entire time, even after the group goes through all the trouble of stealing the plans in Star Wars: A New Hope?

      • Chewbacca
      • Luke Skywalker

      • Point Blank
      • Taken
      Question 5/10

With so many plot holes to choose from, one of the most famous plot holes from this film was that 1,000 years after aliens have occupied Earth, tires are still pressurized, jets can fly with ease, and books are well-maintained. What was the name of this movie?

      • Trinity
      • Agent Smith
      • Neo
      • Morpheus
      Question 8/10

At the end of Edward Scissorhands, while the main character of the film is carving out these amazing ice sculptures of the family that took him in, what is the biggest plot hole about that scene?

      • How did he get those giant blocks of ice into the mansion by himself?
      • The scene happens before he ever meets the family so there is no way he would have known who they were or what they looked like
      • His hands were fixed before he retreated back to his mansion in the end and would not have been able to create those sculptures
      • There is no plot hole, they explain how he really lives on a mountain where temperatures remain below freezing so all he had to do was find a water source to freeze the blocks from inside the attic
      Question 9/10

Once again we are going to focus on George Lucas and his masterpiece Star Wars: A New Hope. Why do the Death Star's laser bolts travel slower than the speed of light?

      • Because Darth Vader later reveals the speed at which his laser bolts were supposed to travel
      • Luke Skywalker figures out the physics of the machine after stealing the Death Star plans
      • This was not a plot hole, the laser bolts do travel at the speed of light
      • It was never explained
      Question 10/10
