Are These Oscars Scandals Real or Fake?

Are These Oscars Scandals Real or Fake?
      Movies · Real or Fake?

By BrainFall Staff - Updated: April 30, 2024

Since 1929, the Academy Awards, more popularly known as The Oscars, have been awarded on an annual basis. They’re considered the gold standard of movie awards, and winning an Oscar is a great honor in the movie world. But there have also been many, many shocking moments throughout the history of The Oscars. This quiz will challenge you to remember some of the most notorious and spot scandals that never actually happened in real life.

Everyone remembers what is likely the most shocking Oscar scandal of all time: when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock over a joke about his wife’s lack of hair. That is not one of the questions ahead, as it’s just too recent and too well-known. Luckily, there are many other Oscar scandals to choose from. And the pool of fake Oscars scandals to pick from is infinite! So see if you can tell which of these Oscar scandals are real and which are fake.

      Oscars Scandals

Academy Award scandals are nothing new. The first few Academy Award scandals may seem odd to people in the 21st Century. It was, after all, a very different world back then. The film industry has come a long way. But as Will Smith slapping Chris Rock shows, there's still plenty of room for shock and surprise at the Oscars in the present day.

One important thing about the following quiz is that all the scandals occurred on the day of the Oscars ceremonies. Some real-life scandals happened at some point before or after the ceremonies and are not included ahead. For instance, the first Black person to win an Oscar, Hattie McDaniel, had her Oscar stolen years after her Oscar win. This shocking story needs to be realized, but as it didn't occur during the ceremony, it's not included.

Are These Oscars Scandals Real or Fake?

Oh, the Oscars! A night when stars strut the red carpet in their glittery best and the air is thick with hairspray and anticipation. It's Hollywood's glitziest gala where the creme de la creme of the film industry come together to toast cinematic excellence. But let's be real, we don't just tune in for tearful acceptance speeches and awkward teleprompter flubs, do we? No siree—we're all about the delicious scandals and juicy controversy!

A spotlight shines on two golden Oscar statues, one with a question mark above it. Tabloid headlines and gossip magazines litter the floor

Now, every year, buzz about certain Oscar events piques our curiosity: Did that really happen? Was it a calculated stunt, or just another wild Hollywood tale? We love to dissect every gasp-worthy moment, separate fact from fiction, and giggle over the not-so-smooth operations on cinema's biggest night. So, as we clutch our bowls of popcorn like Oscar statuettes themselves, let's embark on a riotous quest to suss out the real from the fake—all in the name of good fun. Who knows, maybe this time we’ll uncover some behind-the-scenes shenanigans worthy of an award of their own!

      Notorious Oscar Night Showdowns

The stage is set with a glitzy backdrop and a looming sense of tension. A spotlight illuminates an empty podium, hinting at the drama to come

As we cozy up with popcorn to watch the glamour of Oscar night unfold, it's impossible to ignore the moments that left us gasping. From envelope gaffes to on-stage altercations, these incidents have become Hollywood legends. Let's take a stroll down the hall of fame (or is it shame?) for some of the Oscars' most unforgettable showdowns.

      The Infamous Envelope Mix-Up

Remember when "La La Land" was mistakenly hailed as the Best Picture winner at the 2017 ceremony? Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty became unintended comedians when they announced the wrong winner, due to an envelope mix-up. Within moments, the stage was a swirl of confusion until the true winner, "Moonlight," was rightfully crowned.

A Slap Heard Around the World

Fast forward to 2022, and the air was thick with anticipation as Chris Rock delivered his monologue. Little did we know, a quip about Jada Pinkett Smith would lead to Will Smith storming the stage to deliver a slap that echoed through Hollywood history books. It was the slap heard around the world, and it certainly gave us a new definition of "action" at the Oscars.

      The Streaking Stunt of '74

In case the modern dramas weren't enough, let's throw it back to the '70s when cheeky Robert Opel decided the Oscars needed a little more...exposure. His sprint across the stage in nothing but his birthday suit gave "flashing cameras" a whole new meaning. It's safe to say, that Oscar night was streaked with a bit more excitement than expected.

So there you have it, our dear quiz-takers at BrainFall, the Oscars are more than just shiny trophies and tearful thank-yous—they're chock-full of surprises that keep us talking for years to come. Ready to find out which Oscar scandal you are? Keep playing to see if you're an envelope mix-up or a full-on streaker at heart!

      Scandalous Backstage Drama

Before we roll out the red carpet, let's peek behind the curtain where Oscar's glitter isn't just gold—it's also tinged with shade and scandal. From uninvited guests stealing the spotlight to sneaky tactics in the hunt for votes, these backstage antics are as riveting as the films they honor.

      Unexpected Guests and Speech Crashes

Remember when Sacheen Littlefeather stood before millions, representing Marlon Brando at the Oscars? She famously declined the Best Actor award for The Godfather on his behalf, making a statement about the depiction of Native Americans in film. It was a moment that had Hollywood buzzing—and Twitter isn't around then, but if it were, we're sure it would have gone viral! Then there are those who mysteriously pop up on stage, not to speak, but just... to be there. Can you imagine tweeting that selfie?

      Ballot-Box Controversies and Campaign Tactics

Voting—it's not always a clear-cut case of "may the best person win." The Oscars have seen their share of ballot-box controversies, where voting methods and member choices raise eyebrows. And let's not forget some of the intense outreach campaigning tactics. From whispers of Harvey Weinstein's aggressive push for Miramax and DreamWorks films to the more subtle luncheons and screeners, the campaign for that little gold man can turn into its own blockbuster drama. It's a world where dangling carrots—if the carrots were Oscar statues—is pretty much an accepted strategy.
