Have you ever had your jaw drop at the end of a movie? If so, it may have happened when you saw the first of the Saw movies. The horror films are known for the deadly game ideas that sadistic serial killer John Kramer plays with his victims. Starting in 2003, the Saw film franchise follows the Jigsaw Killer as he lures in police officers and regular people who he deems have wasted their lives by being selfish. The original Saw film started an iconic series of films that became more gruesome as time went on. There have been nine films, and the first film, written by Leigh Whannell and James Wan, set in motion the events that lasted years.
From director James Wan and then Darren Lynn Bousman, David Hackl, Kevin Greutert, and the Spierig brothers after him, these films all follow a similar style of filmmaking. They have become big hits at the box office, and there have been movies labeled as “the final chapter” a few times now. The Saw movie franchise follows the Jigsaw Killer, John Kramer, played by Tobin Bell. Highlighted by a creepy doll riding a tricycle, these mystery and horror films see actors battling against death to try to stay alive. The first film starred Cary Elwes, Leigh Whannell, Tobin Bell, Danny Glover, Ken Leung, Shawnee Smith, Michael Emerson, and more. Two strangers, Lawrence Gordon and Adam Stanheight, are found in a filthy bathroom with a dead body in the middle of them. It is all a part of a Jigsaw trap, and Lawrence Gordon has to decide if he will kill Adam to get back to his wife Allison and his daughter Diana Gordon.
It goes from there, following the Jigsaw serial killer as he puts others through puzzles and traps like a reverse bear trap, slow-acting poison, needles in a box, and more. The original series is filled with thrills, and oftentimes the story and its sequels are told in an order that you might not expect. The game is set in the hands of Jigsaw's disciples. Rotten Tomatoes ratings have been high on some of the films, and the opening weekend at the box office numbers increased after the first film. Jigsaw typically tapes his messages for his victims and explains the rules on a tape recorder, and when the tape ends, the timer typically starts. The game is afoot constantly.
