      How Gen Z Are You?

      How Gen Z Are You?
      Lifestyle · Who Am I?

By BrainFall Staff - Updated: April 30, 2024

Are you worried about being cheugy? Did someone call you sus? You may not realize it, but those are Gen Z terms for being out of date and suspect. You may not know just how out of touch you are, but something that absolutely will bring you back is coming in contact with someone who is from an older generation than you. Generation Z is one of the newest generation born between 1997 and 2012. They are after baby boomers, Generation X, and millennials (Generation Y). They are the youngest generation that is on the internet right now as Generation Alpha isn’t quite there yet.

Gen Zers are a unique breed of kids as they have been raised with the internet and social media. Many of them, unlike previous generations, have never had a house phone. We bet we’re able to guess just how Gen Z you are from your answers to the quiz. Let us try.

Generation Z, or Gen Z, are young people born between the late 1990s to the early 2010s. Gen Zers are ones that have grown up with social media and understand that their personality is what can make them money. They are looking for financial security, and Gen Z workers can start at a young age. They focus on their mental health, and Gen Zers tend to want to work hard now and retire early. They have helped pave the way for younger generations to monetize themselves on social media. Gen Zers value self-expression, and as young people, they are digital natives. Gen Z is very different than the Baby Boomers. They are the first generation to take advantage of up-and-coming technology to brand themselves.

Gen Z has its own way of talking, which is not uncommon for generations. They are people born of a certain era and care about the world around them. Climate change is a thing they are serious about. They look to the future and want to make it better for those after them. Some of them can be more focused on themselves than others, but that's the same as any other generation. Gen Z is one of a kind.

      How Gen Z Are You?

Who needs a time machine when you've got the ultimate cultural litmus test in your pocket? Whether we're swiping on our iPhones or tapping away on our laptops, there's one question burning brighter than the backlight of our digital lives: "How Gen Z are we?" With generations rubbing elbows from Baby Boomers to the up-and-coming Generation Alpha, the term "digital natives" has never felt more real. Oh, to be young and fluent in emoji...

A group of Gen Z symbols: smartphones, laptops, trendy clothes, and eco-friendly products, surrounded by social media icons and hashtags

We may not have the power to pick our birth year or choose whether we fall under the Gen Z, Millennial, or maybe even the mysterious Zillennial category, but we can certainly have a laugh finding out where we stand. With the rise of post-Millennials heralding a new era of short-form videos and meme culture, it's time to separate the Centennials from the Homelanders. Are you ready to find out if your cultural savvy lands you a spot with the iPhone-toting crowd, or if you're teetering on the edge of Generation Y-ou gotta be kidding me? Let's dive into the quirks and perks of Generation Z and beyond!

      Navigating the Digital Playground

A group of diverse digital devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops, are arranged in a colorful and dynamic playground-like setting, representing the digital world that Gen Z navigates

Picture this: We're juggling multiple conversations on several apps, while sneakily reading up on quantum physics (or how to make a killer sourdough starter) during our morning Zoom lecture. Welcome to our world, where social media and a thirst for knowledge go hand-in-hand.

      Social Media Savvy

Let’s talk about our lifeblood, social media. Living in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, our screens became less about escaping reality and more about being the main stage. For us, Instagram isn’t just an app on our smartphones, it's a canvas for our personal art gallery. TikTok? Oh, it’s our go-to for everything from a good chuckle to a quick lesson in astrophysics—and, of course, the latest dance craze. Gen Z and Snapchat are like peanut butter and jelly, a classic combo standing strong amidst the digital chaos.

      • Instagram: Our visual diary and daily source of inspiration.
      • TikTok: A realm where we learn, laugh, and launch trends.
      • Snapchat: Our staple for staying connected and a bit of goofy fun.

Education and the Age of Information

The term "digital natives" gets thrown around a lot, but when it comes to us, it fits like that favorite pair of skinny jeans. We Gen Zers rewrite the book on education using technology as our primary tool. In high school or college, it's not just about reading and math anymore. The Oxford comma? Crucial, just as is our strategic use of search engines for that paper due tomorrow. Enter the age of iGen, where information is readily at our fingertips and higher education is evolving faster than ever, mostly courtesy of the internet.

      • High School: Where we balance equations and emoji use.
      • College: What's higher education without Wi-Fi? That's pure horror for us!
      • Digital Resources: Research papers are often a race against time, with Pew Research Center facts meeting last night's study session.

Whether we're weaving through our digital playground lined with mobile devices or cracking the code to effective communication, one thing's certain: We've got this tech thing down pat. And if you're nodding along thinking, "Yes, we do indeed," then guess what? You might be more Gen Z than you realized.

      Defining Moments and Movements

Ready to find out how Gen Z you really are? Buckle up for a trip through the defining moments and movements that've undoubtedly influenced us all, whether we're Zoomers by birth or spirit.

      From 9/11 to Climate Change

      • 9/11: We all know where we were—or where we weren't yet—at the time of the September 11 attacks. Our generation either grew up in its aftermath or was born into a world forever changed by it. This pivotal moment in history shaped public attitudes, government policies, and even our sense of security.
      • Climate Change: The words climate change are practically tattooed on our collective conscience. It's a major source of climate anxiety for us, but hey, it’s also sparked a huge push for sustainability. We're the reusable straw-wielding warriors making thrift shopping cool and sharing eco-friendly hacks like it's our job.

      Cultural Flashpoints

      • Diversity & Representation: Our squad isn't just a crew; it’s a vibrant tapestry. We champion diversity in all its forms—racial, ethnic, and LGBTQ+ representation matter to us. We took the 'melting pot' and turned it into a full-blown cultural festival.
      • Social and Political Issues: Yes, we've seen some things, like a recession—or two—and a little global event called the pandemic. But, we didn't just tweet about it; we're the generation voting with passion, taking to the streets for what we believe in, and not letting a little thing like "the way it's always been done" stand in our way. Our mix of pragmatism and idealism could probably power a small city.

Dig into these milestones and see how they resonate with your own experiences. Have you been moved by the same moments that define our generation?
