Italian history

Italy, or the Italian Republic, is a boot-shaped peninsula country in the Mediterranean Sea. The Italian peninsula shares borders with other countries in Europe like France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, the Vatican City, and San Marino. It is the third most populous country in the European Union. In the classical era, Greeks established settlements in Southern Italy while an Etruscan civilization and a Celt civilization were located in Central Italy and Northern Italy. The Italic tribe formed the Roman Kingdom in the 8th Century BC, which eventually became the Roman Republic. That eventually began conquering other parts of the world. The Roman Empire was the dominant power in the Mediterranean by the first century BC. The Italian Renaissance is one of the most important parts of Italian history, focusing mostly in Florence.

Religion has played an important part in Italy's history with much of the country being Catholic. Different wars, like the Italian Wars, Punic War, and the Italian Civil Wars, have shaped the country into the military power it was and how they are now. At the start of World War II, Italy joined as an Axis power and joined that side of the war. From fascist regimes to its current unitary parliamentary republic, the Italian government has changed a lot.

From Julius Caesar to Augustus Caesar to Benito Mussolini, there have been different rulers of Italy that have made their mark over history. Papal states, Italian states, and the idea of the city-state are all important to the history of the country. The political center of Italy has always been Rome, and the trade routes throughout the country have allowed for a certain amount of foreign domination. The whole country and the Italian Peninsula have played a large part in the shaping of the Western world.
