By BrainFall Staff - Updated: April 30, 2024

The vice president of the United States is a difficult role to fill. A presidential candidate’s running mate needs to balance the idea of potentially assuming the presidency at a moment’s notice while also acknowledging that they’ll likely be playing second fiddle to someone else for a long time. The best vice presidents were able to use the position effectively for the benefit of the American people. Others did very little during their time in office. And now it’s time to find out which one you are!

The vice presidents who make up the results of this quiz are all individuals who, at the time of writing, never assumed the presidency. While Joe Biden, Richard Nixon, and George Bush are all examples of vice presidents who aided the presidents they served under, their later careers as president of the United States overshadowed their vice presidencies.

Still, there are many interesting individuals who, at least so far, have served as vice president without becoming the president. Take this quiz to find out which one you resemble most closely.

      vice president

Many vice presidents have had prior significant involvement with the government, such as serving as a United States senator, a state governor, or a representative. A significant number also come from legal backgrounds, serving as an elected district attorney, a lawyer, or a similar position. But the role of the United States Vice President comes with challenges that are impossible to fully prepare for.

If you think you could be a future vice president, or if you're just interested to see how your personality matches up with recent vice presidents, then take this quiz! Hopefully, you don't match with someone you dislike!

      Breaking Ties with Flair

We all know that when the Senate is split down the middle, it's the Vice President, as the President of the Senate, who swings in to cast that all-important tie-breaking vote. From John Adams to Kamala Harris, veeps have shown up with flair to break ties, making sure legislation stays anything but stationary.

Contrary to popular belief, we're not just sitting around waiting for photo ops with the President. Whether it's attending cabinet meetings or supporting the Pres in executive branch decisions, we're the reliable sidekick, ready to step into the spotlight or operate behind the scenes.

      Historical Highs and Humorous Lows

Life as the Veep is a rollercoaster, combining moments of profound influence with episodes that writers on Veep couldn't have scripted better. We've had our share of goofy gaffes and noble notables that will tickle the history books for generations.

From One Observatory Circle to Worldwide Wanderlust

Who says we're confined to Washington, D.C.? From our lovely home at Number One Observatory Circle to jetting off on foreign affairs adventures, we're racking up those air miles and spreading American diplomacy. Wanderlust: Vice Presidential edition.

      Power Plays and Presidency Dreams

It's no secret that many of us have our eyes on that Oval Office prize. We've gone from loyal running mates to presidential candidates, thanks to the political platform and visibility that the veep spot provides. Dreams of being the numero uno, you ask? Guilty as charged.

Ceremonial Charisma and Serious Senate Sessions

Our calendar's brimming with ceremonies and senate sessions requiring equal parts ceremonial charisma and policy prowess. Whether it's swearing in senators or officiating events, we're elevating every occasion with our very presence.

      Elevating Every Event

From banquets to bill signings, we're tasked with bringing a touch of vice-presidential pizzazz. It's not just about showing up; it's about elevating the event, leaving a lasting impression that's both presidential and personable.

      Vice Presidential Vital Stats

Age? At least 35. Born in the United States? You bet. Itching to serve? Absolutely. We tick all the boxes of the Constitution, plus some extra zest and zeal that aren't required but definitely recommended.

      The Second-in-Command's Social Circle

Our social circle has more stars than the night sky! We're schmoozing with foreign dignitaries, bonding with Congress, and consoling defeated senators. It's all part of the Veep's charm offensive.

      Amending History and Constitution Quirks

From the 12th Amendment ensuring we're not just an afterthought to the 25th Amendment providing a clear line of succession, constitutional quirks are our jam. And if, by some historic twist, the President can't serve? Well, we're ready for that ultimate promotion.

Hop into our shoes for a day, and you'll see that being the Veep is about so much more than standing by the President's side. It's about casting that crucial tie-breaking vote in the Senate, navigating the intricacies of the executive branch, and nailing the delicate dance of diplomacy. From John Adams to current Veep Kamala Harris, and from Number One Observatory Circle to the corridors of global power, every vice president injects their personality into this role of a lifetime. Whether facing the plight of legislation, taking part in solemn senate sessions, or representing the United States overseas, the life of a Veep is rich with unparalleled experiences. If the presidency is a symphony, then the vice presidency is the most riveting solo — unexpected, influential, and at times, downright entertaining. So, are you the tie-breaker, the confidant, the understudy, or the star waiting in the wings? Join us on BrainFall.com to find out which Vice President you are!

      The Legacy Beyond the Office

Before we slide down the banisters of political history, let's peek behind the curtain to see how Vice Presidents keep on rockin' in the free world after their time in office. We'll chuckle, we'll gasp, and we bet you'll find a favorite among these Veeps gone wild!

      Trailblazers and Glass Ceiling Breakers

Kamala Harris certainly knows how to smash a ceiling when she sees one! As the first woman, first African American, and first South Asian American Vice President of the United States, she's a one-woman demolition team for historical barriers. Following her footsteps, future female Veeps won't need a broom for broken glass—they can thank Kamala for the cleared path.

Scandals, Successes, and Supreme Court Stints

Remember Aaron Burr? His duel with Alexander Hamilton was a scandalous headline grabber! Fast-forward, and there's Richard Nixon, who hopped from VP to President, then hopped right into the not-so-fun game of impeachment. Oh, not to forget those who've donned the robes of a Supreme Court justice. These VPs have scores of stories that could fill a thousand tabloids—or at least spice up a history book.

      Political Pioneers: Then and Now

From Walter Mondale's navigational role in redefining the power of the Veep to Al Gore working on that dang internet thing, these political pioneers have morphed the VP job description. Every new Veep stands on the shoulders of giants—and sometimes, they're just one step away from being the head honcho themselves, just like good ol' Joe Biden!

Post-Vice Presidency: Books, Boards, and Beyond

Post-office life? More like rockstar retirement! Dick Cheney and George W. Bush might have chilled, but they couldn't resist penning their White House memoirs. Others love the speaker's circuit or enjoy boardroom banter. Whether it's writing books or chilling on boards, life after the veepship is rarely dull.

      Veeptastic Veeps and Their Vices

Let's dish on some of these VPs' more peculiar pastimes—because hey, who says politicians can't have fun? Think of Barack Obama hitting those three-pointers or Dick Cheney on a quail hunt (friends beware!). Our VPs have shown us that balancing the nation's duties and some lighthearted leisure is the key to keeping cool under pressure.
